The Project
Q&D Construction’s work on the Nugget Events Center Plaza was entered in the AGC Nevada’s Contractor’s Excellence category for General Engineering projects under $10 million. The plaza is a spot to bring music to your ears and let the tunes put a little pep in your step.
Design & Construction Quality
The project included building a 15,000 SF plaza area, adjacent and south of the new outdoor events center – along Victorian Avenue. The project’s mission was to create a new user-friendly environment – complete with expanded wall seating and decorative guitar pick shade structures as well as stereo sound and improved lighting.
The area features 11 shade structures with mounts for speakers and lights. The area also features raised planters, landscaping in addition to an upgraded and relocated ticket booth. Bulletin board kiosks with an option for backlighting were also added. Thousands of new pavers were installed to provide flat surface area after new drainage measures were put in place.
Q&D made it a priority to coordinate with Nugget officials during the busy summer concert series season in late summer/early fall 2023. In addition to concerts, Q&D had to keep access in and around the construction area open during popular special events like Hot August Nights and the annual Labor Day Weekend rib cook-off.
A key component of the project for Q&D Construction proved to be the continuous communication with third parties – specifically the architect, Design Workshop and utility provider, PK Electric. Additionally, the structural engineer and civil engineer, Linchpin and Odyssey Engineering respectively, played important roles.
Collaborative efforts also called on subcontractors Alignment Metal Works, Titan Electric and Legends Landscaping. These efforts made sure all components came together, avoiding conflicts and creating a high-quality and maintainable finished product.
"There were many challenging aspects of the project including accommodating traffic, building 11 large unique steel shade structures, concrete seat walls, pylon renovations, outdoor lighting, sound system upgrades, pavers, landscaping, adhering to City of Sparks specifications, and coordinating with multiple agencies.
Q&D was instrumental in creating an innovative and efficient method of constructing the seat walls and working to ensure the large steel shade structures were constructable and performed as intended. Q&D worked with the City of Sparks, Nugget personnel, and community stakeholders to provide innovative solutions to allow both vehicle traffic and foot traffic to operate during construction. Over the course of construction Q&D had to create a safe work area to accommodate for several large scale events including concerts, Hot August Nights, and The Best of The West Rib Cookoff.
