This Regional Park in Sparks features these playing fields: 6 softball, 2 Babe Ruth, 2 Little League and 3 multi-purpose fields. It also has play equipment, picnic areas, restrooms, concession buildings and a maintenance building. To generate the necessary construction funds, City of Sparks sold their former sports complex, leaving the team with 8 months to create playing fields in time for the spring baseball and softball season.
“In just 8 months you delivered playing fields, so we could meet the deadline for spring baseball and softball season. To do that, Q&D’s team leaders aggressively partnered with City of Sparks, the design consultants, and the subcontractors. I recognize how diligent and proactive you needed to be to move through a massive scope of work and address problems before they affected the schedule.”

SYSTEM HIGHLIGHTS
Q&D utilized environmentally friendly construction strategies that lowered project costs and minimized the impact to the environment. These techniques included the use of recycled aggregate base, which provided a superior foundation for the parking lots and hardscape areas. We also recognized that onsite embankment could be processed for use as bedding sand. In order to take advantage of this, an onsite screening operation was established, and spec-bedding sand was produced. The use of embankment as bedding sand eliminated the need for the City to issue a contract at a future date to off-haul the excess embankment that was originally anticipated.
FINISH HIGHLIGHTS
Because Q&D worked to identify $700,000 in value engineering ideas at the beginning of the project, the team was able to cover significant grading adjustments.
