Reno-Tahoe Airport Automated Baggage Check-In

The intent of the Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority’s (RTAA’s) Airport Baggage Check-in (ABC) project was to relocate the TSA screening equipment and operations to the “back of house,” combine ticketing and baggage check-in, improve the process with state-of-the-art screening and detection equipment, and remodel the lobby to include modern finishes and a theme that represents the natural landscapes and recreation activities of the Lake Tahoe region.

“Under the proactive and diligent direction of Q&D, this project exceeded our expectations. I am exceptionally pleased with the outcome, a project completed early and under-budget with great community and airport stakeholder support; and as important, the positive team relationships that remain in place today. It has been a pleasure to work with your dedicated, knowledgeable, professional and loyal team. I highly recommend Q&D Construction, Inc.”

– Krys T. Bart, A.A.E., former President/CEO of Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority

System Highlights
Phase One involved the assembly of an engineered temporary structure to enclose the temporary screening, baggage handling and ticketing areas. This strategy, moving airline operations out of the path of construction, saved the project considerable time and money. Once the structure was in place, in June of 2008, major construction began on the addition of back-of-house space for state-of-the-art screening equipment and operations, concurrent to ticket lobby finish revisions. This second phase, which included a new automated baggage handling system with 6000 linear feet of conveyor belt, was completed in November of 2009.

Finish Highlights
The traditional ticket counter back wall consisting of airline-specific branding has been replaced by airport-controlled LCD screens that allow for dynamic updates and branding changes. The revisions provide a more integrated and uniform design throughout the remainder of the ticket lobby, which is now a more open and user-friendly environment. The upgrades are reflective of the Reno-Tahoe region, with interior finishes of stone and wood materials.
