I-580 Southbound Reconstruction Nearing Completion

Reprint of NDOT Director Rudy Malfabon’s RGJ Letter to the Editor 9-26

“At NDOT, our priority is to keep you safe and mobile on Nevada roadways. As major construction wraps up on our I-580 Southbound Reconstruction Project, we want to thank the community for their understanding of this important project that will help keep Reno drivers safe and connected.

Over the recent months, contractor Q&D Construction has completely reconstructed much of southbound I-580 directly south of the Reno spaghetti bowl interchange. Concrete on the interstate was nearly 40 years old and in need of repair. Crews placed 7,000 cubic yards of new concrete to replace the old concrete, providing a safer and smoother interstate surface for decades to come. We also improved the roadway median barrier, signage and more. Some smaller project improvements will continue through spring on northbound and southbound I-580.

Major roadway improvements are important, but we know they also impact drivers. That’s why we want to thank the community for their understanding of this important project. On certain areas entering the spaghetti bowl interchange and construction zone, traffic volume dropped by as much as 40 percent. By finding an alternate route or having patience when traveling through the project area, drivers created a safer and smoother work zone for everyone.

Thank you again to all community members and drivers for their understanding of this important project to improve I-580!”

Rudy Malfabon, director, Nevada Department of Transportation
